grape(fruit), again,     forever

A nuanced ode towards Yoko Ono’s artists’ book Grapefruit- where uncertain instructions, the (digitally) permanent and impermanent, and grainy film footage coexist together in this seemingly fragmented world. A set of 6 sensory instructions are gently carried out amidst an unidentifiable ambient soundscape, as the film ponders how to hold onto everything, forever.

This experimental short was created as part of the If You Ask Me 2022 program by Workman Arts and was premiered at the Rendezvous with Madness film festival in November 2022.

Comissioned for the 28th Edition of the Toronto Reel Asian Internation Film Festival as the Festival Creative Artist

 “This is a story that unfolds along a scrolling timeline. I am fascinated with the idea of exploring images as sound, as language, as music. In the world of IMAGE LULLABY, each and every image we see performs a sound. This work consists of fragments from the Reel Asian archives alongside images collected throughout my personal lived experiences. They imperfectly exist on their own in this vast digital landscape, yet their collective existence is contextualised together in harmony. In unison, they sing. All together, they form a bigger picture- creating something new: a story, a film festival, an image lullaby.”

In Full Circle is a series of short video still lifes- together they are a personal and contextual reimagining of the traditional still life paintings from the historical art collection of the Ontario Society of Artists.

Eternity (Reprise) is a musing on time.

Every play through of Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2 indicates a passing of time, of tangible duration, a timestamp.

Eternity (Reprise) is a looping video work looking to convey a sense of forever, of infinity. The portrait cellphone videos used impart some sort of looping, circling, or repetition; the familiar piano music playing over and over again with no foreseeable end within the space. 

It is a visual representation of forever.

Set respectively in the Philippines and Hong Kong, filmmakers Angelica Llanera and Agnes Wong each compose a quiet letter to their grandmothers in this nuanced portrait of the two older women- expressing the sentiments they never had the opportunity to say. Fragmented memories, unhealed wounds, and secrets are explored in this cathartic experimental short about longing.
